India is the land of the splendid palaces, towering forts, mystic lakes, majestic mountain peaks, beautiful structures, rich history and varied culture. In Indian there is diversity not just in its culture or traditions but also in its flora and fauna. With mother nature being generous on this land, there are lots of wildlife sanctuaries found here. One of the most famous one is the Wayanad Wildlife Sanctuary.
Formed in the year 1973 a part of Project Elephant, Wayanad Wildlife Sanctuary, is the second largest wildlife sanctuary in Kerala. Divided into two parts, the Upper Wayanad Wildlife Sanctuary in the north and the Lower wildlife Sanctuary in the south it is a part of the Wayanad plateau. One of the most rich and extensive forests belt of Peninsular India , Wayanad Wildlife Sanctuary is quite a tourist attracter.
This wildlife park known for its tigers and leopards is a part of the Cannanore district. This sanctuary is rich in bio-diversity and is an integral part of the nilgiri biosphere reserve. The wildlife in Wayanad Wildlife Sanctuary includes panthers, tigers, elephants, civet cats, monkeys, wild dogs, bisons, deer, snakes, monitor lizards and much more. It is in the dry seasons that one gets to see the elephants here. During the monsoons the elephants migrate to other places.
The flora in Wayanad Wildlife Sanctuary in the form of rich deciduous forests of teak, bamboo and marshes are home to lots of wild animals. Birds of various species- peacocks, babblers, jungle fowls and many many more populate the Wayanad Wildlife Park.
The beautiful hills, fresh and colorful flowers, the wildlife, plantations like that of coffee, pepper, and tea make Wayanad National park an exciting and interesting place to be in.
Best Season to Visit
From June to September the Wayanad Wildlife Sanctuary region is blessed with heavy showers and March, April and May are the hot months. So the best time to visit the sanctuary is from September to November.
How to Reach There
Reaching Wayanad Wildlife sanctuary is not a problem at all. There are various means of getting there. The tourists have their options to decide from as to how they prefer getting to Wayanad.
By Air:Calicut and Cochin are the nearest airport. There are lots of flights which fly in and out of these airports carrying tourists. Outside the airport there are buses and taxis are available for Wayanad. The tourists also have the option of booking a private taxi or bus for their commutation to Wayanad.
By Rail: The nearest railhead is in Calicut which is well connected with the rest of the country.
By Road: Wayanad has an excellent road netwok which connects it to the rest of the state and further to the country. There are busses and taxis that drive in from Calicut,Cochin and other parts of the country quite frequently.
