Nestled in hilly terrains and forests with home to a numerous birds and animals, Wayanad National Park is also the home to a wide range of vegetation and trees comprising of flora and fauna. Wayanad National Park lives upto its name of being the 'land of swamps'. Thick vegetation comprising mostly of moist deciduous type of trees of south India covers the forest.
An integral part of the Nilgiri Biosphere Reserve whose main objective is to conserve the biological heritage of the region the flora in Wayanad National Park is rich in bio-diversity it was transformed into a wildlife sanctuary in 1973. The Wayanad Wildlife Sanctuary covers an area of 345 sq.km and is rich in flora and fauna.
The flora in Wayanad National Park attracts tourists from near and far. The beautiful lakes, rivers and streams add a magical touch to the Wayanad National Park making it the second largest wildlife sanctuaries in Kerala. Animals can be seen here in their natural habitat and and the tourists can also see human settlements within the sanctuary and observe the lifestyle of the tribes.
The most extensively forested belts in the Indian Peninsula the Wayanad National Park, flora has greenery all around with a major portion of the forest canopied with teak, eucalyptus and grevelia trees. The deciduous forests consists of trees like maruthi, rosewood, vengal, karimaruthi, mazhukanjiram, chadachi and many many more and the semi deciduous forests has trees like- Lagerstroemia, Termianalia paniculata, Lanceolata, veteria indica.
The flora in Wayanad National Park also boasts of coffee plantations and species of caussia which cover a major portion of the national Park. There are many scientists who have made this national park a place for their research work.
