Established in the year 1973, Wayanad National Park spread over and area of 354 sq.km is the second largest wildlife sanctuary in Kerala. Part of the Nilgiri Biosphere Reserve this wildlife sanctuary was formed to conserve the biological heritage of this area.
The wildlife in Wayanad National Park consists of tiger, elephants, leopards, gaur, jacal, Indian fox, sloth bears, chitals and sambars- all are seen here in their natural habitat. Safaris are not catered for here but the tourists are allowed to take their personal vehicle with a local guide.
A paradise for birdwatching, birds in Wayanad National Park include the likes of- cuckoo, babbler, owl, peacock, woodpecker, jungle fowl are just a few of the birds seen here. These birds can be seen around the national park flying in the skies or frolicking about the trees.
