Srivilliputhur Giant Squirrel Sanctuary is located in the Virudhunagar District, 45 kms. Off Virudhunagar Town. The sanctuary has a composition of dry deciduous forests with patterns of tropical evergreen, semi evergreen forests, moist mixed deciduous forests and grasslands.
Grizzled giant squirrels thrive here. Other fascinating species found here are flying squirrel, tree shrew, elephant, lion-tailed macaque, Nilgiri tahr, mouse deer, barking deer and many a species of birds.
Grizzled Giant Squirrel known in Sri Lanka, as the Sri Lankan Giant Squirrel is a large species of squirrel found in Sri Lanka and in the forests of southern India. The species is found in patches, near forests along the Kaveri River in south India and also in hill forests towards the southern tip of India and in parts of Sri Lanka.
Wet evergreen forests are found in the south along the Western Ghats. It is characterized by tall, straight evergreen trees that have a support trunk or root on three sides like a tripod that helps to keep a tree upright during a storm. The more common trees that are found in Srivilliputhur Giant Squirrel Sanctuary are the Jackfruit, Betel Nut Palm, Jamun, Mango, and Hollock.
Semi-evergreen
Semi-evergreen forests are also found in Srivilliputhur Giant Squirrel Sanctuar along the Western Ghats. Such forests have a combination of the wet evergreen trees and the moist deciduous tress. The forest is dense and is filled with a large variety of trees of both types.
Moist deciduous
Moist deciduous forests are found throughout India specially regions of Tamil Nadu. The trees have broad trunks, and are tall and have branching trunks and roots to hold them firmly to the ground. These forests are dominated by sal and teak, along with mango, bamboo, and rosewood, which form a natural habitat for the fauna and birds of this sanctuary.
Some of the major water bird species found in The Srivilliputhur Giant Squirrel Sanctuary are the paradise Flycatcher, Indian Pitta, Rosy Starling, Blyth Reed Warbler, Crested Serpent Eagle and Brown Shrike.
The annual rainfall here is from 500 mm to 900 mm.
Visitors can come to Srivilliputhur Giant Squirrel Sanctuary year round as the weather is fine most of the year.
