Though relatively small in size, the Ranthambore National Park is known for its rich and varied wildlife in all over the world. The wildlife in the park includes a number of mammal species, bird species and reptiles. According to a census there are around 30 mammal species, 272 bird species, 12 reptile species and 350 plant species including 50 aquatic plants in the Ranthambore National Park.
But, the major attraction of the Ranthambore is the presence of significant population of Tigers, whose number is estimated between 30-40. Probably, the Ranthambore National Park is the only tiger reserve in India, which has seen a significant rise in number of tigers in recent times. The Mammals: The Ranthambore National Park is home to about 30 species of mammals; identified so far. In this category come the Blue Bull or Nilgai, Caracal, Langur, Common Mongoose, Palm Civet or Toddy Cat, Common Yellow Bat, Desert Cat, Fivestriped Palm Squirrel, House Mouse, House Rat, Indian False Vampire, Indian Flying Fox, Indian Fox, Indian Gazelle or Chinkara, Indian Gerbil, Indian Mole Rat, Indian Porcupine, Indian Wild Boar, Jungle Cat, Leopard, Long-eared Hedgehog, Ratel, Rufoustailed Hare, Sambar, Sloth Bear, Small Indian Mongoose, Small Indian Civet, Spotted Dear or Chital, Striped Hyena and the Tiger. The Birds: The Ranthambore National Park also has a sizeable bird population, both resident and migratory. The park is home to about 272 species of birds; identified so far. The most important in the bird's list include Graylag Goose, Woodpeckers, Indian Gray Hornbills, Common Kingfishers, Bee Eaters, Cuckoos, Parakeets, Asian Palm Swift, Owl, Nightjars, Pigeon, Dove, Crakes, Snipes, Sandpipers, Gulls, Terns, Great Crested Grebe, Eagles, Darters, Cormorants, Egrets, Herons, Bitterns, Flamingos, Ibis, Pelicans, Storks, Pittas, Shrikes, Treepies, Crows, Orioles, Cuckoo-Shrikes, Minivets, Drongos, Flycatchers, Ioras, Wood-Shrikes, Sparrows, Finches, Wagtails, Pipits, Bayas, Munias, Bulbul, Mynas, Falcons etc.
The Reptiles: There are about 12 species of reptiles in the Ranthambore National Park. In the reptiles list include Banded Krait, Common Krait, Cobra, Freshwater or Swamp Crocodile, Ganga Soft-shelled Turtle, Indian Python, North Indian Flap-shelled Turtle, Rat Snake, Russell's Viper, Saw-scaled Viper, the Desert Monitor Lizard and the Indian Chameleon. In addition, there are a wide variety of fishes in the numerous water-bodies in the Ranthambore National Park.
