Situated about 96 kms from Mysore in Karnataka, Nagarahole (a combination of words – nagara + hole -- which means snake + streams) National Park extends 644 sq km north from River Kabini. A dam was constructed on the Kabini River in 1974 to form a charming artificial lagoon.
The park is home to a large varieties of birds and animals. Nagarahole National Park in Karnataka is part of the Mudumalai Sanctuary, which shares its boundary with Bandipur National Park.
During the dry season (from February to June), large numbers of animals flock to these water sources, which make make this place a major destination for spotting wildlife. The park is rich in vegetation and flora that has tropical deciduous forest in the northern and western parts and dry deciduous forest in the southeastern part. Hatgat, Arikeri and Nalkeri reserve forests form the Nagarahole National Park.
Several shrubs belonging to Desmodium, Solanum and Helicteres are abundantly found here. But weedy shrubs like Lantana and Eupatorium now dominate.
