The vegetation in Mundanthurai Sanctuary is diverse. The hilly terrain of the Western Ghats has Dry deciduous to tropical wet evergreen forests with patches of reed and dense and moist deciduous forests. This makes Mundanthurai Sanctuary one of the most attractive wildlife reserves.
Mundanthurai Sanctuary has diverse geographical features, which supports a wide variety of flora and fauna. The terrain of the Sanctuary is rolling and has narrow water streams. According to estimates, Mundanthurai Sanctuary has a forest cover of about 567 sq km, mainly comprising of thick evergreen forest.
The high mountain ranges of the Western Ghats have dense cover of evergreen, moist deciduous forests and savannah grasslands. In addition, the marshy areas are full of tall grasslands, making the region one of the good habitats of large mammals. The thick vegetation of the Mundanthurai Sanctuary provides both excellent cover and nourishment.
Savannah grasslands develop in areas subject to distinct wet and dry seasons and where mean annual rainfall varies between 200 and 600 mm. Temperatures are high throughout the year in savannah grasslands but characteristically 60 per cent to 90 per cent of the year's rain falls in a short period of a few months. The vegetation varies from open-canopy forests with a grassy lower level to classic savannahs in which grasses are dominant
Wet evergreen forests are found in the south along the Western Ghats. It is characterized by tall, straight evergreen trees that have a support trunk or root on three sides like a tripod that helps to keep a tree upright during a storm.. The more common trees that are found in Srivilliputhur Giant Squirrel Sanctuary are the Jackfruit, Betel Nut Palm, Jamun, Mango, and Hollock.
Moist deciduous
Moist deciduous forests are found throughout India specially regions of Tamil Nadu. The trees have broad trunks, and are tall and have branching trunks and roots to hold them firmly to the ground. These forests are dominated by sal and teak, along with mango, bamboo, and rosewood, which form a natural habitat for the fauna and birds of this sanctuary.
The annual rainfall here Varies from below 1000 mm in lower reaches to nearly 4000 mm in the hills.
Private vehicles can drive around in the park. A person can walk around the park. He can have a guide with himself and is allowed to walk in the park for a maximum of four hours
