The vegetation in Mundanthurai Sanctuary is diverse. The hilly terrain has Dry deciduous to tropical wet evergreen forests with patches of reed and dense and moist deciduous forests. This make Mundanthurai Sanctuary one of the most attractive wildlife reserves and attracts large number of exotic birds to.
The two distinct birds of this region are:
Black Eagle breeds in southern Asia from India and Sri Lanka to south east Asia. It is a bird of woodland.
Black Eagle is large about 80cm in length. Adults have all-black plumage, with a yellow base and feet. The wings are long and pinched in at the base with a distinctive shape. The tail is long and the wings are huge.
Both the sexes are similar, but young birds have a beige head. Black Eagle eats mammals, birds and eggs. It is a fertile nest-predator and is known for its superb flight zooming in and out of the canopy. Its claws are specially designed for snatching and holding on to the prey.
The Yellow-footed Green Pigeon is a common species of Green Pigeon found in South India. The variety feeds on fruits of a large variety of fruit trees including a number of species of Ficus. They scavenge in flocks. In the early morning they are often seen on the tops of emergent trees in dense forest areas, like the one's in Mundanthurai Sanctuary.

The best time to visit the park is from October to January. It is suggested. It can be chilly in the winter.

The guide includes information about habitats and maps showing range of different birds found in Tamil Nadu and where and when they migrate and what their song or call sounds like. The better guides show seasonal color changes, similar appearing species, and provide information on how to tell them apart.
