Kalakkadu Sanctuary has diverse blend of flat land, rolling parkland, open grassland, swamps, valleys and Nullas.
The vegetation is varied. The hilly terrain of the Western Ghats, dressed in dense and moist deciduous forests, make Kalakkadu Sanctuary one of the most attractive wildlife reserves.
Kalakkadu Wild Life Sanctuary is situated in area of 223 sq kms in the Tirunelveli District, near the foothills of Western Ghats. The flora ranges from forests of tropical wet evergreen to Tropical dry deciduous and thorn forest at down hills
Tropical and subtropical moist broadleaf forests are found in the humid subtropics of Tamil Tanu, and are characterized by warm, humid climates with high year-round rainfall. Tropical regions with lower rainfall are home to Tropical and subtropical dry broadleaf forests and coniferous forests. Temperate rain forests also occur in certain humid temperate coastal regions.
Wet Evergreen Forests are found in the south of India along the Western Ghats and the Nicobar and Andaman Islands. Tall, straight evergreen trees characterize it. These trees often rise to a great height before they open out. The most common trees that are found here are the Jackfruit, Betel Nut Palm, Jamun and Mangoes. The shrubs cover the layer closer to the ground, followed by the short structured trees and then the tall variety. Beautiful fern and varieties of orchids grow on the trunks of the trees
Dry deciduous forest
Dry deciduous forests are found in some parts of India including Kalakkadu Sanctuary in Tamil Nadu. It is also found in Madhya Pradesh, Gujarat, Andhra Pradesh and Karnataka. The common trees are the sal, a variety of acacia, and bamboo.
Broad-leaved forests
These wet forests consist mainly of evergreen trees with a dash of deciduous trees. There are oak, alder, chestnut, birch, and cherry trees. There are a large variety of orchids, bamboo and creepers growing in the sanctuary.
Trekking is allowed with the permission from the officials of Forest Department. Accommodation is available at Forest Rest House.
The best time to visit the park is from September to March. It can be chilly in the winter.
